3-4 Sources that affected my academic progress
Pipher, Mary Bray. Writing to Change the World. New York: Riverhead, 2006. Print.
An excerpt from Pipher's Writing to Change the World called What Alone You Can Say is still in progress in helping me find my "voice" in my writing. It makes me realize that no one but myself can talk about my experience and say they know what it felt like because they truly don't. Only I know what my experiences feel like because I'm the one who went through it.
Gruwell, Erin, and Richard Lagravense. Freedom Writers. [S.l.]: Paramount, 2007. Print.
This book shares may stories of students who were going through many difficulties during the time where gang-violence reached its all-time high. Reading their diary entries get me thinking about my choices that I've made and how I should be grateful that I don't have to go through what they went through of feeling as if the only to live is through the gang-life. I realize how important my education is and lucky I am that I have the opportunity to even get an education.
Dweck, Carol S. Early Intervention at Every Age. 65.2 (2007): 34-39
An excerpt called The Perils and Promises of Praise is what helped me most when I had to write my educational autobiography. This reading is what I related to the most and I agreed to the most. It helped me realize the mind-set I had throughout my years in elementary school and in high school, and I learned about how I obtained that mind-set. From reading that excerpt, I even learned how I can go from a "fixed-mind-set" to a "growth-mind-set." Instead of expecting things to come to me the "easy way," I should be active and do things on my own so that I can grow intellectually and gain more knowledge.
Diana, Hacker, and Sommers Nancy. A Writer's Reference. 7th ed. Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin's, [2013]. Print.
A Writer's Reference has helped me a lot with any summary or essays that I was required to write. Being enrolled in the writing lab course required me to use this book while I do my work. I learned a lot about the importance of proof-reading, annotating, splice commas, etc. I also learned how to cite my sources correctly, realizing how I've been doing it wrong all throughout high school.
